Living in NYC there are so many gyms! Cheap gyms, fancy gyms, specialty gyms... the list goes on and on. If you're looking for a gym in New York City (or wherever you live) I highly suggest that you check out the YMCA.
Here are five reasons why I adore the YMCA:
1.) Financial Assistance
If fitness is a priority for you, money should never be an obstacle. The YMCA is one of the more affordable gyms that still has all of the amenities I need (steam room, sauna, towel service, etc.). and here's the amazing part. If the standard rates are still a bit too high for you, the YMCA provides financial assistance. Pretty cool, right?
2.) The Swimming Pools
I featured the YMCA in my favorite places to swim in NYC post and my opinion of them still stands. The first time I swam laps at one of the YMCA in NYC I almost cried tears of joy. Most pools at NYC gyms have pretty short lanes, which makes it hard to build endurance with your laps. But the YMCA pools are very long, spacious and clean. The YMCA also offers adult swimming lessons and I've even seen people scuba diving in the deep end!
3.) Diversity + Positivity
One of the things I like about the YMCA is that everyone is there, from babies to grandparents and everyone in between. For me that creates a beautiful vibe of diversity and positivity. I feel super comfortable in the locker room (remember my journey with that locker room confidence? augh!), I don't feel judged by anyone and it's not a competition in classes. People show up to have fun and get fit... it's exactly what a gym should be! Also, there's nothing more inspiring than lifting weights next to an 80 year old (just saying!)
4.) The Indoor Track
I feel like the best kept secret of the YMCA is the indoor running tracks. I find the indoor tracks helpful when the weather is bad, I can walk/run in perfect climate. I also love that the floors are sprung, which makes for more a comfortable workout on my joints than running/walking on cement.
5.) Free Trial
No matter where you live in or outside of NYC you should take advantage of a free pass to check out the facilities in your neighborhood... For NYC residents, click here
